Guide to Linux by Peter van der Linden

  • Prentice Hall
  • first printing August 2005
  • copyright 2006 Pearson Education, Inc.
  • ISBN 0-13-187284-2

Overview

This is a straightforward guide to Linspire Linux. The book is an in depth exploration of the Linux GUI Desktop for the Linux beginner. Pearson Education lists the book as a course text for Networking and Linux college class work.

Provides enough information for the SOHO user to become comfortable switching to the Linux Operating System. Peter van der Linden has based the book on the Linspire distro, but he has left enough room so that new users of other distros may find the book useful.

Intended Audience

The book is intended for the new Linux Desktop user who wants a "Windows type" manual or tutorial for Linux.

Highlights

This book guides the reader through:

  • customizing the KDE Desktop
  • the Konquer file manager
  • mounting and using CD's and DVD's
  • setting up networking
  • connecting to the Internet
  • file sharing
  • file security and user's encryptions
  • installing your printer
  • using Linspire's "Click 'n Run" update
  • using apt and synaptic
  • other topics

Fun Stuff

  • The cut and fold TUX on page 245.
  • I'll remember the last chapter "Keeping Your Data Private". I am sure that I will find the information in that chapter useful for quite some time.
  • Peter van der Linden's Guide to Linux comes with a Live CD copy of the Linspire distro. This is not an installable disc, darn!
  • Here's a link to an excerpt from the "Keeping Your Data Private" chapter.
